Symptoms of a Failing Inducer Motor

  • Furnace will not ignite – The inducer may not create enough draft to close the pressure switch.
  • Inducer motor does not start when there is a call for heat.
  • Humming or buzzing while the inducer motor is trying to start.
  • Grinding or squealing noises from worn motor bearings.
  • Rattling or excessive vibration from the inducer assembly.
  • Pressure switch fault codes caused by insufficient draft.
  • Intermittent operation where the inducer starts sometimes but fails at other times.
  • Furnace goes into ignition lockout after repeated unsuccessful heating attempts.

A pressure-switch error does not always mean the inducer motor has failed. Venting restrictions, condensate drainage problems, pressure-switch tubing or the pressure switch itself should also be checked.
