Common Symptoms of a Failing Rheem PROTECH 62-23543-01 Flame Sensor

If your Rheem or Ruud gas furnace in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, or anywhere in Alberta, or throughout the Greater Toronto Area, including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Ajax, Pickering, and Oshawa, starts the ignition sequence but fails to stay running, a worn or contaminated 62-23543-01 flame sensor may be preventing the control board from proving flame.

As the flame sensor ages, carbon, oxidation, and other contaminants can build up on the sensing rod, reducing its ability to detect the burner flame. The furnace may ignite normally, but the gas valve will shut off within a few seconds because the control board believes no flame is present. After several failed ignition attempts, many furnaces will enter a safety lockout until power is reset or the fault is corrected.

Common symptoms include:

• Burners ignite but shut off after 2–5 seconds.
• Furnace repeatedly retries the ignition sequence before locking out.
• Intermittent heating, especially during colder weather.
• Furnace runs for a short time before shutting down unexpectedly.
• Flashing diagnostic codes indicating flame sensing or ignition faults.
• Furnace requires cycling the power before it will operate again.
